What is hand-block printing?

Hand block printing is the process of printing patterns by means of engraved wooden blocks. Hand block printing is the earliest, simplest, and slowest of all methods of textile printing. This form of printing gives you highly artistic results.

In India hand block printed chanderi silk is very popular and practiced extensively in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Techniques of hand block printing in India

Direct printing: In this method, the silk is first bleached. Then the fabric is dyed, unless a light background is desired. After that, the fabric gets printed using carved blocks. First the outline blocks, then the ones to fill color.

Resist printing: In case of resist technique, areas that need to be protected from the dye are covered with a mixture of clay and resin. Then wash the dyed fabric. The dye spreads into the protected areas through cracks which produce a ripple effect. Then block prints are created for further designs.

Discharge printing: In this method, first the fabric is dyed. Then, a chemical is added to get rid of the dye from the portions that are to have designs in different colors. These portions are then treated, so they may be re-colored.

The process of producing chanderi silk sarees

The uniqueness of chanderi fabric lies in its beautiful motifs embellished on the fabric. Traditionally, the motifs were inspired mostly by flowers, coins, fruits, peacocks, and heavenly but in today’s time abstract geometric motifs.

Designing

The designs are first painted on a plain sheet in the colors that were required. Then these get transformed on graph papers. These graph papers are known as NAKSHA or TALIM.

Buying the yarns

We purchase chanderi silk from different parts of India. The count of silk was of denier 20/22. The silk yarn was purchased from Kashmir and Bangalore.

Dyeing of yarns

These dyed yarns of chanderi silk are used for weaving. Pure chanderi silk sarees are woven by adjusting the dyed yarn for the design in the sarees.

Sizing of yarns

Koli kanda is used for sizing. A paste is made with soft water to this a calculated quantity of water is added and the required consistency is obtained through heating and stirring constantly using a bamboo stick. The dyed yarns are then stretched on bamboo sticks and the size was applied with brushes. Two or three layers then get used and finally allow it to dry in the sun.

The weaving process

We have the best weavers who have been doing it for generations. The silk is so fine that the weaver has to put trays filled with water under the weft in order to make out the gossamer strand. We often mix silk and gold in the body of the sarees. The border is generally made up of gold thread. The yarns that are gummed or undergummed are wet while warping. This increases the fineness of the yarns and the saree becomes gauzy. The entire sarees are woven using plain weave.

The finishing process

The chanderi silk sarees are given a calendering process for finishing with a kundi. This is beating down over a wood block with a mallet which makes the warp and weft more compact and gives the surface a unique shine.
